Perry was born on July 25, 1968 in Chicago, Illinois to Laurie Metcalf Perry and Jeff Perry. Her first television roles were two appearances on the show as Jackie Harris (as seen in flashback) in The ABC sitcom Roseanne as the character played by her mother. Her parents, however, were not keen to let her pursue acting until she became an adult fearing the effect of stress. Perry acknowledged that she was not confident in her acting during high school. However, she began doing it to connect with new people at Northwestern University after switching from Boston University. Perry moved to New York, where she landed small roles in series like Law & Order: Criminal Intent. The feeling of homesickness led Perry home to California which was where theatre jobs were available. In 2013 she performed in The Other Place on Broadway alongside her mother. Her father Kevin McKidd performed in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prizewinning drama Anna Christie with her in the year 2015. In 2016, Perry appeared on nine episodes of ABC's thriller The Family. In 2017, Perry played a supporting role in ABC's thriller about politics Scandal which starred her father. In the same year, she appeared as a younger model of Mary Cooper on Young Sheldon (a CBS spinoff The Big Bang Theory) in which she played her mother as a young version. The role was offered to her by auditioning for an open role despite being a fan of the role.
